Fish Injuries
The
most common cause of injuries like this is spawning - most of these wounds heal
themselves, but a spray of iodine would help.
When
carp are found round the edges of the lake in this condition it's a combination
of poor condition parasites/bacteria and the lake need attention, otherwise
heavy losses may occur.
Damage through poor netting, inc. being kept in a
keep-net for too long with too many fish, and allowing pegs with long gravel
banks and rocks from the water's edge where the fish are dragged in by
inexperienced anglers.
The most
common course of damage like this is poor removal of hooks, allowing bacterial
infection to enter the hook wound.
Due to
lack of aeration and heavy water-bound sediments, too much ground bait and over
stocking - hence poor condition.
When you
let your lake get silted up, all you need is a spell of hot weather and you
will lose all your fish, as this client did, through CO
2 build up
i.e. a lack of oxygen.
This
picture shows the problem you get when you allow home made boilies to be used
on your fisheries. They go rotten inside the fish's gut and poison the blood
stream.
Boilies should be seen by the owner and should be in sealed,
recognized, manufacturer's packet or supplied by the fisheries manager. All
others should be prohibited because you have no idea what ingredients have been
used.
I've seen boilies which contain WD40, a freeing oil and other such
stupid ingredients as fish attractants.
Note the red spots - classic
sign of sepsis. The larger your carp, the more of this rubbish they will eat,
so there's a higher degree of contamination. Once the guts are infected death
is a certainty.
(Please note: this particular fish has not died of
boilies contamination).

Many fish at this time of year die through spawning, but it
must be said, many more die from infected wounds when spawning as the water
quality is so poor, system are full of water bound sediments. This is poor
water management and for no other reason.
